Ironically, lawmakers want to repeal Parkland gun law
The inevitable barrage of “thoughts and prayers” is coming.
A mass shooting Thursday at Florida State University in Tallahassee ended with the death of two people and the injury of five others. Phoenix Ikner, a 20-year-old political science student, was taken into custody. The son of a former sheriff’s deputy reportedly used his mother’s service gun. CNN reported that other students said he had expressed extreme right, anti-diversity views on campus.
That hasn’t been independently confirmed and there are certainly going to be other factors involved. There are still details being learned today.
But what we do know is that this is the sixth mass shooting in Florida just since January, according to Wikipedia.
And yet, about a mile from the FSU campus at the state capital, the Republican-led Florida Legislature is actually considering a repeal of the gun control law that was passed weeks after the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, in which 17 people were gunned down by a 19-year-old with a semi-automatic rifle, which basically stopped most people under 21 from purchasing certain types of guns and rifles. They can still get one as a gift, which should also be illegal.

In fact, the repeal passed the Florida House last month in a 78-34 vote mostly along party lines. It could die in the Senate, where similar bills have died in 2023 — when lawmakers did pass the open carry law — and 2024 . But why is it even being considered?
On Thursday, as the events took place at FSU, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis posted the same ol’, same ol’ on his social media.
“Our prayers are with our FSU family and state law enforcement is actively responding,” DeSantis said. Like a robot. Like on cue.
It’s the state legislature that has to respond — with real action and gun reform that makes senses, not by taking us backwards with just words and thoughts and prayers.

Yes but that is reality so now what ?
Things are not changing and would think many of these shooters are insane so not like moral values was going to change a thing .
Truth is no one has an answer but again seems like law enforcement has stopped plenty of shootings so we are moving in a better direction .

Yes but guns are the tools used in mass killings . With your reasoning why ban grenades , mortars , etc ?
I do not subscribe to banning certain guns , I do subscribe to banning automatic fire which is already banned but your reasoning does not make any sense .
AR-15 is not an auto and though I do not own one do not subscribe to banning that but the NRA argument that guns do not kill is absurd ..
The only real solution is to completely ban guns .
I have 2 guns at home so do not want that to happen , I could carry like everyone else but not my personality .
There is no middle ground thus we have to accept no real solution though law enforcement FBI, Police have helped cut back on plenty of potential shooters .
The problem is not the weapons but the moral values that have eroded. Everyone is looking out for themselves and could care less about their neighbor. When I was in school sure we got into fights, and they were settled. But we didn’t want to kill each other. We came back and either respected each other or became good friends. Simple truths of Love your neighbor and do not kill are now forgotten and not taught anywhere, especially in homes.
Now it’s know your rights, do what feels good, don’t let them take advantage of you, Me,me,me, and do it no matter the cost! The cost of a selfish, entitled, non compromising, social attitude. This has caused our country’s separation, and nothing will change till we come together and learn to meet somewhere in the middle and work together without hate, and putting ourselves first. If you learn to Love your neighbor, chances are you won’t kill them.
“Thoughts and prayers” gets tiresome, i think is your point. it means little, it does nothing. I kind of agree.
but just as tiresome are the calls for gun laws every time something like this happens. they too mean little and do nothing,
guns are part of the history & ethos of this country. from day one. has it ever occurred to you gun control advocates maybe you need a different tack? because youre running into that definition of insanity thing. you know, the one about expecting different outcomes from the same actions?
don’t get me wrong… I don’t have a solution, but I don’t pretend I do, either. I do know it’s not as simple as “those Republican freaks just need to pass a law”. because there are 1000s of laws in the books that do not prevent bad behavior.
The gun issue in our country is a hypocritical sad reality like in no other industrialized society.

Guns don’t kill people; they are killed by other people who are violent, usually because they were not properly brought up.
In Frisco, Texas, a young man was killed with a knife by another young man, who thought that he had been disrespected. He did not use a gun.
In London they are trying knife control.
