Check your mailbox for the next few days. The Miami-Dade Elections Department on Thursday will mail about 215,000 vote-by-mail or absentee ballots to county voters with a request on file for the Aug. 20 primary election.

That’s a significant drop from the August 2022 primary, when the initial mailing was 392,000 absentee ballots, according to Roberto Rodriguez, deputy supervisor of elections. In the 2020 primary, the department sent out 332,000 absentee or mail-in ballots.

For the November 2020 general, more than half a million mail-in ballots were sent to voters.

Voters who have not yet requested one for next month’s primary have until 5 p.m. Aug. 8 to do so. Here’s how:

Even voters who submitted ABs or mail-in ballots in 2022 have to request it again. Florida legislators changed a law 2022 that caused all vote-by-mail requests to expire on Dec. 31 of that year. In Miami-Dade, 438,000 voters were purged from the vote-by-mail ballot request list.

Ballots must be received by the elections department by 7 p.m. Aug. 20. They can be sent by mail — no postage necessary — or placed in a secure ballot box at any of the 23 early voting locations.

Early voting starts Aug. 5.
