U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman on the highest bench, will be coming home this week to South Miami-Dade, where her parents still live, for a street naming ceremony in her honor.
Brown Jackson, who graduated from Palmetto Senior High, class of 1988, will have a portion of Eureka Drive, between Old Cutler Road and Caribbean Boulevard, named after her Monday morning. Commissioners approved the street naming, sponsored by District 8 Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, in October.
“Justice Jackson’s confirmation to the Supreme Court was a historic moment for our nation, our county, and South Dade,” Cohen Higgins said. “Justice Jackson is not only the first black woman to sit on the Supreme Court, she is also the first Supreme Court Justice from Miami-Dade County.
“As a mother, lawyer, public servant and woman of color, the Justice is an inspiration, to say the very least,” the commissioner said. “It is my absolute honor to recognize the Justice and to do so during Women’s History month.
Brown Jackson was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Joe Biden on February 25, 2022. She was confirmed by the United States Senate on April 7, 2022, and sworn into office on June 30. She was previously a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 2021 to 2022.
“This street naming will only begin to recognize Justice Jackson’s impact and serve as a confirmation to women and little girls that you too can accomplish your dreams,” Cohen Higgins said.
Congresswoman Frederica Wilson went to the Oct. 6 meeting to support the street naming.
“When generations of our children look upon the Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson Street, they too will feel the same pride and know that nothing is impossible,” Wilson said.

What has she done? In her first months on the court Justice Jackson took apart the independent state legislature theory or independent state legislature doctrine (ISL) in short order during oral arguments with a grace, clarity, and efficiency that Justice Alito could only dream of even before he and the rest of the conservative supermajority started exercising their extreme hubris by even bringing up such an inane idea hoping to lay ground work for judicial rewrite of the US Constitution. Judicial restraint? Yeah only when it serves the majority ideological agenda. Otherwise it’s worse than Lochner Era rewrites of Constitutional Law to give Corporations “rights” and powers the founders NEVER envisioned these artificial immortal illegal, illegitimate and “beings” never should have had.
Do we now name streets after people who are still alive? What his she done to deserve this other than being first black woman named to the SCOTUS? What don’t we wait to see what is she capable of doing in such a position? This is just typical liberal pandering…
