Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago backs Renier Diaz de la Portilla — say what?

Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago backs Renier Diaz de la Portilla — say what?
  • Sumo

He has not endorsed colleague Jorge Fors in the county commission race

One would surely expect someone like Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo, a Trumpster sell-out who posts memes promoting the big lie on social media, to endorse someone like Renier Diaz de la Portilla, who has waged a race-baiting, false campaign against Miami-Dade County Judge Fred Seraphin.

One might even expect Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who has become something of a snake oil salesman and national spokesman for cryptocurrency, to endorse the Fredo of the DLP dynasty. After all, Suarez needs big brother Alex Diaz de la Portilla‘s vote on the city commission.

And Baby X has already sold his soul to the devil (read: Jorge Mas).

But Vince Lago? The even-tempered mayor of Coral Gables with the open house days at his office and the environmentally friendly legislation? The one who used to have a political future?

Even though Lago is a Republican and ADLP was seen at his election victory party last year, this endorsement that showed up on a mailed flyer last week has surprised many people.

It’s particularly perplexing because he hasn’t endorsed his own colleague, Gables City Commissioner Jorge Fors, in the District 6 county commission race, with a far greater impact on the city than a judicial race.

Could that be because Alex Diaz de la Portilla is supporting Kevin Marino Cabrera?

Lago did not call or text Ladra back over more than a week. He used to say he would always be accessible. He doesn’t say anything now. Is he maybe ashamed of the endorsement? Could he be regretting it? He obviously doesn’t want to talk about it. Maybe he hoped nobody would notice?

Or could it be that Renier Diaz de la Portilla used it without Lago’s permission? It’s not like he hasn’t done that before. A hit piece against Judge Seraphin quotes an assistant public defender who said she had no idea her words would be used in his judicial campaign. And in 2020, when he ran for Miami-Dade commissioner against Eileen Higgins, he used a Miami Herald photograph without the photographer’s or paper’s knowledge or consent.

If you like what you read in Political Cortadito, please take a moment to make a donation so Ladra can keep sniffing out the political shenanigans. Thank you.

Baby DLP is also a known liar. He is lying about Judge Seraphin — who made Miami-Dade history by becoming the county’s first Haitian-American judge when he was first appointed to the bench in 2001 — in a race-baiting ad about a false arrest. He lied when he said in a forum that he tried a dozen cases successfully (it’s more like five). He lied when he told people he resigned from the public defender’s office. He was fired.

But if he lied about this endorsement, why won’t Lago call back or denounce it?

There are so many reasons not to back Diaz de la Portilla that one has to wonder why Lago took the political risk and walked out on this limb. Was he asked by his own baby brother, a lobbyist who was having lunch with Miami Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla when h e was slapped by CJ Gimenez at Morton’s Steakhouse in February. Was it a favor to BFF Francis?

Was it a nod to the Miami commissioner himself? Remember, Alex Diaz de la Portilla was one of the bad boys at the mayor’s re-election victory party last year. The Dean had shown up to help at the end of the campaign and on Election Day.

Is this endorsement the favor you owed him?

  1. IMO the real Miami does want lies but to the credit of those who post here and read these forums which is a hell of a lot who do not post ( I know plenty ) they are not the real Miami.

A quote which I remember as apply it to politics .

I think is from the movie Needful Things Leland Gaunt aka The Devil or might be from The Prophecy with Christopher Walken.

    Lol I remember quotes .

“I lie to those who need me to lie to them , want me to lie to them . You could say I provide a public service . How can there be any harm in that ?”

  2. “Vince Lago? The even-tempered mayor of Coral Gables with the open house days at his office and the environmentally friendly legislation? The one who used to have a political future?”

He has you fooled. “No Joke” is right.

Environmentally friendly legislation? Greenwashed legislation and political stunts is more like it.

Open door Fridays? Who keeps track of who attends those meetings or are they a work around for public records for those meetings?

Even tempered? That’s the best oversight yet- you can see his ticks on the dais when he gets upset. You have not seen him trash residents behind closed doors. Petty and vindictive are perfect adjectives to describe his behavior.

  3. Shame on Francis Suarez and Vince Lago for supporting Renier Diaz de la Portilla, who is a complete disaster! From Bovo, this is expected, but you two should know better!

  4. ” For some time now I’ve been regretting having voted for Mayor Lago”

Much to your credit you voted / vote which is more then can be said about the politically apathetic majority in Miami .

When you vote you win some , lose some .
Here you lose most , lol but what can you do .

Politics for me is lesser of evils but here OFTEN there doesn’t seem to be even that .

I find the choices often so bad that I now simply rely on The Magic 8Ball to pick the candidate .

I’m in Doral and choices are Bermudez or Lacayo for Commissioner .

I asked the 8Ball ‘ Will they actually work for us the residents ? ‘
Reply was ‘ Don’t count on it ‘.

I asked again ‘ Will they both work exclusively for developers and build even more in this cement city ?’
Reply was ‘ It is certain ‘.

  5. Vince Lago’s legacy? Renier? Fredo? Coral Gables’s reputation just went in the shitter. Just wow! Corrupt Renier. Corrupt Alex…

  6. Ladra,

You write some great articles. However, your continuous attacks on Trump supporters and Republicans really detracts and take away from your powerful articles. We need to go back to the old way of thinking that people come from all races, places, political views, ideas, and opinions. One should disagree with another person, but no attack the person. Republicans and Trump supporters should not be treated like if their views, opinions, and positions are wrong just because they might be contrary to those of Democrats and socialist and communist way of thinking. After all, Republicans are trying to protect our democracy, while Democrats are trying to transform this Country to look like other countries around the world. For instance, one way you can transform a country is to take away people’s freedom one piece at a time. For example, attack and limit the people’s points of views, if it does not coincide with one party’s position.

While your articles can be quite insightful, they are less impactful because of your editorial comments. Sadly, the articles became more of the sad state of affairs we living today.

  7. Mayor Lago, retract your endorsement of Fredo DLP immediately. Fredo is a deadbeat dad, fired former public defender, known alcoholic, and perennial candidate for public office (thankfully he loses more than he wins). Does your little brother need the votes at the City of Miami so bad that you need to lick their boots as well? Pretty weak if you ask me. The Mayor of the City of Coral Gables caught on his knees, “resando” at the feet of corrupt City of Miami officials. Postalita 2.0

  8. Judge Seraphin’s arrest was a classuc false arrest. Holding that against him means that de la Portilla’s ugly and misleading ads work.

  9. Endorsement is A pad in The Back of The Good Old Boys Club & Tomorrow you will back mee Too. Fors is Backed by ( “La Mentirosa “) Rebeca Sosa ?

  10. For some time now I’ve been regretting having voted for Mayor Lago. Things like this make me feel like I definitely wasted my vote on him. Surely, I won’t do it again.

  11. When I received this mailer, it came on the heels of the two bull shit flyers. One showed Cabrera as a “Democratic” pick – thank you for showing that Republicans received the same one in red with Republican pick plastered in bold at the top. The other was the smear on the judge who was racially profiled as a teen and erroneously arrested. Then I’ve learned on NPR of the school board candidate who is using elected officials as false endorsements. I thought that this endorsement was also bogus but so far no objection from Mayor Lago. Very disappointing.

  12. Very scary. The mayor needs to clear the air immediately, as no one living in Coral Gables wants the DDLPs (or Carollo or any other Miami clown) to have even the possibility of a toehold in our city. Let them stay east of 37th Avenue and ruin Miami. We have enough problems without them adding to the mix.

Vince, I know you are reading this. You are really tarnishing your reputation with this one. We consider you a good guy, and that is why you beat Pat Keon. If this is true, then, trust all of us, even strangers like me, when we tell you this is not good for you or our city.

  13. Even in our adopted country we Cubans end to gravitate towards “los hombres fuertes”. And we wonder why Cuba has only known dictatorships in its 120 years of nationhood?

  14. La Cosa Nostra ‘ This thing of ours ‘.

‘ Cosa Nostra is who I am , it’s part of me , it is my heritage , it’s in my blood , I only interact with other Cosa Nostra ‘
