What ‘free state of Florida’ is he talking about?
So much talk about the free state of Florida and parental choice for months, and this week Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis proved it was all political fodder for his base. He doesn’t really care about parental choice.
That is why DeSastre the bully berated and shamed two students who were probably forced to be there as props for a press conference Thursday at the University of South Florida in Tampa. It was indoors.
“You do not have to wear those masks. I mean, please take them off,” DeSantis said, huffing and puffing and pointing fingers, visibly upset. “Honestly, it’s not doing anything. We’ve got to stop with this COVID theater.
“If you wanna wear it, fine, but this is ridiculous,” he scoffed, as he turned away from them and shook his head in what could have been interpreted as rejection.

So what is ridiculous, governor? That their parents chose to have their children masked? Because the parents of two of those students told TV reporters that they told their kids to mask-up. Is their parental choice somehow not good enough now? It’s only good enough when the parents choose what you want?
Where is the freedom in that?
Not only is DeSantis ignoring true parental choice when it comes to masks, he is ignoring parental choice in what is likely the most excruciating decision anyone has to make: to terminate a pregnancy.
This is certainly somewhere where parental choice should be first and foremost. But the guv is about to sign a bill into law that will make abortion illegal after 15 weeks rather than 24, as the law stands now.
“The only thing that we’re asking in this bill is that whatever decision you make, you do it before the 15 weeks,” said Republican Sen. Ileana Garcia.
Who the hell is she to be asking that of anyone?

There are a few exceptions for birth defects but none for rape or incest. Because, you know, our GOP legislators — and this bill passed strictly along partisan lines — know better than we do when it’s acceptable to terminate a pregnancy and when it’s not.

DeSantis for President. He is a terrific leader. He merely told those kids don’t masked up because of him and gave them a choice.

Now, they make out better than Florida, and it’s not to say that Florida doesn’t react, it picked up the pace , back in September , and put the brakes on.
The governor should not be bullying anyone especially kids. He should respect those who choose to wear a mask. The only “theater” here was the governor’s temper tantrum!

That’s exactly how it was. The clip is linked in the story and I watched it several times. I also saw the news stories out of Tampa TV news where they spoke to the parents of two of those students (because 17 or 18, they are still someone’s children) said they told/asked their kids to wear masks. So, no, it was not theatre. And masks do work, not just for COVID but for all contagious viruses. Like the flu. My 21-year-old daughter works in retail and I ask her to wear a mask and she does. It’s our choice. Why can’t you just accept that not all parents shun the masks? If you are truly for parental choice it should be whatever they choose. To mask is their choice. But it’s not about parental choice. It’s about political posturing.

You lose credibility when you run a misinformed hit piece like this. Did you actually watch the clip, or are you just peddling a narrative?
DeSantis, rightly so, advised the students they didn’t have to wear the masks UNLESS THEY WANTED TO, and there was no reason to continue to be forced to engage in “covid theater”. Parents are desperately trying to get the masks removed in the schools, so not at all sure what you are talking about when you spout “parental choice”.
Parents want their children to stop being forced to play act as if there was a deadly menace out there, being forced to wear masks, etc. Covid is over. Move on.
First of all those were grown ass college students not some middle schoolers who need parental control. and I would agree with the Dr The kids were “encouraged” to mask up by someone. My take was Ron was laughing realizing what theater was really going on and basically told the kids to grow up and make their own choice. Which is what college is all about.
As to the abortion bill I was in Tallahassee and sat in the Senate gallery for the “debate”. At best I would characterize it as preordained. There was no compromise just kabuki. Very frustrating on both sides.
Those kids were made to mask up by their union “educators” to make a political statement. De Santis merely pointed out they have a choice to not wear a mask! Thank you, governor!
Abortion is murder. We need to go all the way and show that the state of Florida promotes a culture of life by making abortion illegal under all circumstances except to protect the life of the mother.
DeSantis is just a mini version of our previous president, who constantly talks out of the side of his mouth and like others mentioned, is only looking out for his best interests and those of his supporters. He has ZERO interest in making this state better and if you look at his policies, it is all about taking away real freedoms (only supporting the views or positions he agrees with), all in the name of courting his base. There isn’t a courageous or bold bone in his body. I am tired of both parties coming up with such dubious leadership. Florida needs bold, brave and educated leaders willing to put Florida CITIZENS first, companies, special interests and greedy lobbyist last.
At every step of the way, this Governor, who got off to a good start, has shown his contempt to freedom of choice. He tells cruise ships they have to be covid factories and can’t insist on safety protocol, he forces schools to not do the right thing locally, he tampers with decision making at the lowest level, over-turning things local leadership advocate (as he has done here in Miami with Covid policies in schools and government). He is educated enough to know better but is a ruthless autocrat who governs by fiat. He gins up hate for immigrants, a Trumpian tactic, picks on kids and adults with different ideas about sexuality, and now abortion without the protection for rape, incest or human trafficking. He distains scientific policies on vaccines and masks. Race education? Forget it. We’ve never had a race problem here! He is another vile, freedom-killing politician relishing his limelight in FOX News, while avoiding any legitimate reporters. I am a reformed Republican turned Independent over the backward slide this country is taking until this kind of disgusting ‘leadership’. We have to purge hypocrites like Scott, Rubio, DeSantis and most of the Republicans in this state to get some sanity and freedom back.

Abortion is absolutely a woman’s choice and her choice only!!
I support much (but not all) of the governor’s current platform but he was wrong here. He lost his patience with kids and as you correctly point out they were probably just following campus protocol and/or parental guidance. He should apologize for losing his patience with them. He is human and we all lose our patience from time to time. He should apologize and move on.
Regarding the abortion comment, you use the word parents to describe the people making the decision made to abort a baby. I think this is important because it acknowledges that it is in fact a baby and not just a clump of cells since parents are parents to babies, not clumps. If it is a baby then killing it before it is born is no different than killing it one month or one year after it is born. No matter how agonizing the circumstances, parents should not be permitted to kill their children.
