He’s in! Bruno Barreiro files to run against Joe Carollo in city of Miami

The long-rumored challenge to Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo is true: Former Miami-Dade Commissioner Bruno Barreiro — whose wife lost to Crazy Joe in 2017 — has filed documents to run for the seat in District 3.

Barreiro, who resigned in 2017 to run for Congress (losing to Maria Elvira Salazar un 2018’s primary) was at City Hall turning his documents in Friday afternoon, but people have been whispering about his candidacy for months. After all, he did support the Carollo recall last year against the man who attacked his wife, Zoraida Barreiro, with very negative mail pieces.

“Definitely he hasn’t been representing this district,” Barreiro told Ladra about an hour after filing. “There are a lot of empty promises that haven’t been filled, like affordable housing, clean streets.”

In fact, there are already 1,900 plus voters — those who signed the recall petitions that never saw the light of day — who would likely support him.

Barreiro says he is concerned about the gentrification of Little Havana that has happened under Carollo’s watch.

“It’s very sad. Rents are going up and people are moving out. There’s no reason people can’t continue to live in Little Havana in proper living conditions. We can improve the area.”

A former Florida state rep, Barreiro believes he can do more for the city — and bring more to the city — than the incumbent.

“The city needs a lot of help. It needs someone who can work in teams to get things done,” he told Ladra. “You need to work with the county, the state, different jurisdictions. I can bring that to the dais.

“I’ve worked across the aisle to accomplish affordable housing, clean streets, to improve infrastructure. People know my history,” Barreiro said.

Already, his replacement at the county, Miami-Dade Commissioner Eileen Higgins is supporting him. The Democrat could not be reached for confirmation, but her political consultant, Christian Ulvert, will be part of Barreiro’s campaign team, the candidate said.

Joe Carollo did not answer his phone or return a call or text for comment. He raised $374,000 for his reelection — all in April and from interesting sources (more on that later). May’s report is due next week.

But Barreiro, who also lost a 2020 House comeback attempt to State Rep. Nick Duran, is not new at this.

And Carollo — who won his seat by a measly 252 votes in 2017 — didn’t have an opponent before Friday. Not officially. Not really. Someone named Rodney Quinn Smith opened a bank account and filed paperwork in March, but nobody knows who he is.

But now it’s a real race. Get the popcorn ready, it’s going to be fun.

  1. Bruno is a YES man. He voter for every zoning change that came up before him at the county. You are replacing one corrupt politician with another. Sad that the city of Miami can’t get new politicians, they just recycle them!

  2. City of Miami Strong Mayor:

Sec. 4. – Form of government; nomination and election. Sub-part temporarily removed; it Stated if more than 25% of the electorate votes in favor of the strong Mayor form of government said votes can be “rolled” over till next general election; therefore only needing another 25% plus one vote to achieve the majority vote for a strong mayor form of government. In other words, if Mayor Francis Suarez is reelected he will in effect be a strong Mayor with full executive powers that he campaigned for during the strong Mayor’ race. This section has been removed to conceal the Mayor’s true intentions. Listen, don’t take my word for it call City Hall, ask the city employees, ask the media, this is happening. The residents of Miami need to know if they will be tricked into voting for a strong Mayor form of government. This issue should be looked at in more detail given the reality that the City of Miami has historically made questions on ballots Nebulous.

  3. Bruno Barrerio was the sponsor of the legislation that diverted over $3 Billion from the taxpayers to Jeff Loria. Yup. Bruno promoted the newly renovated Orange Bowl being demolished. And he promoted the No Bid $3 Billion scam. Taxpayers got screwed.,

  4. Anyone who states the Bruno Barriero is the same as Joe Carollo has no idea what they are talking about. Bruno is always been a gentleman and a consensus builder unlike Joe who is a bully. The city deserves leaser that will not bring their personal petty fights to the dais.

  5. Barreiro says he’s worried about gentrification while aligning with Eileen Higgins who is a gentrifier herself? Por favor! They want to put Barreiro in cause they know they can steamroll right over him. Joe sera un loco but Barreiro es tremendo comemier….

  6. An old joke….”But other than that how did you like Dallas Mrs. Kennedy?”

OMG and I thought my stuff was pushing it , lol.

  7. ” Bruno Barreiro is no better than Joe Carollo ”

Politics is the lesser of the evils but what makes Miami so endearing is that often there is no lesser of the evils .

The political choices are equivalent to being bit by a 12 foot white shark or 12 foot tiger shark ,take your pick.

Having said that my method here as far as Commissioners is ‘ Incumbents voted out ‘ .

Maybe a third candidate who is honest , ethical and decent will step up .

LOL who is kidding who ( I laugh at my own jokes ) .

The position of Commissioner is a nightmare of self serving , pocket lining parasites and an utter disaster for Miami .
Much of their unethical conduct enabled by Rundle .

Miami has ONLY suffered due to that unnecessary office of Commissioner ..

  8. We breathed a sigh of relief when the tired commissioner descended from his chairman’s loft. He now wants to play with the Little League. He makes good comments, maybe he should look into Alex’s exit route!

  9. An old joke….”But other than that how did you like Dallas Mrs. Kennedy?”

OK so other than the Marlins his record is he did no harm…yes, not much of a platform and all the shit Joe with come up maybe long shot with but imagine commission decorum with Silent Bob replacing bombastic Joe.

  10. Barreiro is “WORTH ” than Carollo ! Keep your eyes in the $$$$$ DONATIONS and FOLLOW The MONEY !!! Barreiro Lie”s All The time and CAN’T BE TRUSTED !

  11. All:

It is not excellent news! This is exactly what is wrong with Miami. The City of Miami and Miami-Dade County need to do away with career politicians. Bruno Barreiro is no better than Joe Carollo. As a matter of fact, he is just as bad. This is the former County Commissioner who insisted and exerted pressure to then County Manager to move forward with Marlins ballpark, when both the County and the City could not afford it. He made Jeffrey Loria a billionaire on the backs of the taxpayers. I will predict that Joe Carollo will exploit this issue and the fact that after being a County Commissioner for almost 20 years, Bruno only has the Marlins debacle to refer to. Bruno has nothing else to talk about, because he never accomplished a damn thing as a County Commissioner. We all know his angle has always been how his Medical Centers and properties can benefit from zoning decisions.

Might as well stay with Crazo Joe, because “Lazy Snoopy Looking” Bruno will sleep through the City Commission meetings as he did during his days as a County Commissioner.

    THE TRUTH DON’T LIE!
