While everyone was busy buying toilet paper for the coronavirus or trying to get the recall petitions against Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo freed from the city’s grasp, Miami-Dade Commissioner and mayoral 2020 candidate Daniella Levine Cava sent out her first countywide mailer.
It’s the first Miami-Dade mayoral race mailer that arrived at Ladra’s house, and from what I can tell, anybody’s. For all his money, 
former county Mayor Alex Penelas is late on that.
Earlier this month, Miami-Dade Commissioner Xavier Suarez released his first radio spot, a Spanish-language poem or limerick about Penelas and his half-penny tax.

“Miami-Dade’s growing challenges stem from the failures from yesterday’s politicians who refused to act boldly and led with no vision for the future,” says the piece, obviously referring to Penelas, who is considered by many as the frontrunner.
“Daniella Levine Cava is running for Miami-Dade County Mayor to win the future and make history,” says the 8 1/2 X 11 piece on matte card stock that opens up to poster size and went to all August likely voters. That’s a big universe.
She’s also trying to make it a girl power thing.
“This Women’s History Month, help Daniella make history right here in Miami-Dade.” And it’s not the first time she’s gone that route. (Pssst, it didn’t work for former School Board Member Raquel Regalado. Why would it work for you?).
Inside it says “two decades of failures,” — so she can include Penelas, again — “has led to today’s challenges,” flanked by headlines about corruption, traffic and flooding, because climate change and sea level rise is going to be a cornerstone of Cava’s campaign.
The mailer has two candidate petitions attached, because she is trying to qualify by turning in 14,258 petitions, or 1% of the county’s registered voters. Campaign manager Christian Ulvert said they’ve already turned in 11,000 and they’ll have another big batch next week.

“We’re aiming for 18,000 to overshoot for obvious reasons,” Ulvert says, because all petition gatherers need a 5 to 10 percent 
cushion in case some signatures are thrown out or fake or challenged.
“Step 1, fill out the petition below,” it says about the petition that has your name and voter number already on it. “If there is another voter in your home, have them fill out the second petition as well.
“Step 2, Detach the petition from the mailer and place it in the mail — no postage necessary.”
It has a picture of the candidate and a family laughing and smiling so hard it looks staged. Nobody enjoys petitioning that much.
Saturday morning, Ladra also got a text message: “It’s Daniella Levine Cava. Via mail, you should’ve received our petition to qualify for the ballot. Pls sign and return it by 3/31. No post needed-Thx DLC.”

Cava has as much of a chance to be our next mayor as a three legged horse has of winning the Triple Crown. Stop fancying yourselves with her chances. She will not even make the runoff.
So, Ladra, apparently you aren’t impressed with Daniella. I have been and remain so. She gets my vote. And as far as women winning office, you might wish to take a look at how many women won the 2018 election for Congress.

Daniella Levine Cava works tirelessly for this community. While she is only one vote on the county commission, she focuses on the big issues of climate change, water quality, transportation, and improving the lives of everyday people in Miami-Dade county in addition to the needs of the people in her district. We need more people like her in our government.
As to your “girl power” comment, such snarkiness undermines your credibility.

But hasn’t Daniella been part of the failures and lack of moving the pendulum in the social justice arena for the last 2 decades?
Hasn’t she been an elected official for 20% of those 2 decades of failure?
Has she made friends with other elected officials to be able to accomplish much at County Hall or will County Hall just become gridlocked?
