Doral Councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez-Aguilera has decided that she will not run 
against Miami-Dade Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz after all — but another Doral resident named Marjorie Figueira did.
Who? Exactly!
All we know right now is that Figueira is a former educator who sued the School Board in 2007, alleging harassment by then Superintendent Rudy Crew. Oh, and that she’s the Pet’s Trust candidate. Both Michael Rosenberg and Rita Schwartz were with her when Figueira qualified Tuesday. She did not immediately return a call from Political Cortadito.
We have to wonder if she will have the same financial support from car mogul Norman Braman that was pledged to Rodriguez-Aguilera. We may not know for a while, though, since he left Friday for his yearly sojourn to the French Riviera.
Rodriguez-Aguilera did not chicken out, as Diaz and/or his supporters have been crowing, according to las malas lenguas. “I’m not afraid of anybody Fidel Castro. I’m not going to be afraid of him,” she told Ladra.
She said her decision not to run for a commission seat was hard but that she felt obligated to the residents and employees of Doral, who begged her to stay.
“I had a lot of calls from different employees and people not to leave Doral,” Rodriguez-Aguilera told Ladra. “They said, ‘If you leave, who’s going to defend us?’
“I thought long and hard and I’ve only been here one and a half years. I couldn’t leave my people here,” she said.
“Besides, then I would be practically giving my seat to Pete,” she said, referring to former Councilman Pete Cabrera, who has filed to run against her.

I dought seriously that anyone would miss her in the City of Doral. I certainly wouldn’t!
In my opinion, from what actions I’ve seen from Bettina since she’s been on the City Council, she loves to Grandstand but has no follow through on what she proposes.
Typically she proposes things that others have previously sponsored, but then has no follow through on these issues…
Bottom line… No Results!
Pete Cabrera, like him or not, is a much better candidate and a much better person!

Don’t get me wrong but the Pet Trust folks have their priorities way out of whack. Yes, they won a straw poll (congratulations). A poll that was non-binding. It was a cop out and they know it. Go ahead place on the ballot a measure that says we will raise your taxes to save our pets. People are literally hungry on the streets, cops are going to be laid off and libraries closed but raise taxes for the animals. It is not going to happen and politicians who have to be elected are not going to be intimidated by a straw poll. Not when they have to face a binding election every four years.

Michael Rosenberg and Rita Schwartz want to move into the big leagues politically. They think that sponsoring a candidate will get them there. What it will more likely do is to piss off the County Commissioners who may have been supportive or their goal of opening spay and neuter clinics around Miami-Dade County and of putting Michael and Rita on the reconstituted spay and neuter board. And keep in mind that they’re not the best fundraisers in local politics. (They raised $60K on their non-binding referendum, but a County Commission race is going to take a lot more. Ask Daniella Cava-Levine.) Michael may be the President of the Kendall Federation of Homeowners, but Pepe’s district doesn’t touch Kendall.
