Doral Councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez-Aguilera might trade in the drama of her city for the dysfunction of the county: A live push poll last week asked voters if they would vote for her in a race against Miami-Dade Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz.
The caller also asked voters if they would be more likely or less likely to vote for Diaz after knowing he voted in favor of the Marlins Park deal, higher taxes and commission raises.
Reached Saturday, Rodriguez-Aguilera said that people had been encouraging her to run for the commission seat for months. She’s considering it and said she would likely make up her mind by Monday or Tuesday, when qualifying begins.
“I really have to think about it. I love Doral,” she said.
And she’ll likely be re-elected there without much problem. She was elected last year to fill a vacant seat, so she’s up again.
Is a bird in the hand better than two in the bush?
If Roriguez-Aguilera decides to jump in, she’s going to have to race to catch up financially. Diaz has already amassed close to $186,000 and there is a PAC working for all the incumbents so he can tap into more. But she would also get a lot of help from people who say that Diaz only represents himself and from the friends and family of former Mayor Manny “Maraña” Maroño crowd in Sweetwater who say the commissioner abandoned his friend when Maroño — serving a three year sentence — was arrested on federal bribery charges last August.
Oh, and don’t forget all the people who watch for UFOs. Rodriguez-Aguilera has said she was abducted by aliens. Ladra can see the Pepe Diaz mailers now with little green men telling Bettina to run.
Bettina might be the second choice for the Pet’s Trust people, who had approached JC Bermudez months ago to see if he would run against Diaz. No word from them about whether or not they were responsible for the poll.
