Spotted at a Coral Gables eatery the other day: Carlos “CJ” Gimenez, the county mayor’s son, and Hialeah Council Vice President Luis Gonzalez, who is considering a run at the Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser’s Office.
While, he wouldn’t tell me what they discussed, Gonzalez confirmed to Ladra Wednesday that the two had met for “not lunch” but coffee or “something like that.”
Could it be that CJ was there to pledge his daddy’s support for Gonzalez? Well, that is, if former State Rep. Marcelo Llorente, who came in No. 3 in the 2011 countywide mayoral recall race, doesn’t decide to go for it.
Gonzalez wouldn’t confirm that when I asked him about the rumors. But he couldn’t stop smiling, either.
“We’re still in conversation,” Gonzalez told me, which sounds sorta like confirmation that he and CJ, the attorney/lobbyist son of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, at least talked about the property appraiser’s position.
The mayor might be interested in getting a “friendly” in that office since he did nothing but butt heads with former Property Appraiser and former State Rep. Carlos “C-Lo” Lopez-Cantera, who was tapped as Lieutenant Governor by Gov. Rick Scott, making the choice elected position, which pays $190,000 a year, suddenly available. C-Lo sued Miami-Dade County last year to gain more independent control over his office and, county insiders say, he was unwilling to let the budget needs dictate property values.
Two candidates, former Property Appraiser Pedro Garcia — who lost in a tight race to C-Lo and only by absentee ballots — and Alex Dominguez, who lost two races recently (one for state rep and another for Miami commissioner).
And while it may not be what Llorente had in mind in terms of his next step in public office, he hasn’t made up his mind.
“I’ve gotten a lot of calls urging me. I’m not going to definitely rule it out,” Llorente told Ladra, declining to answer if one of those callers was Gimenez.
But he didn’t say no, either.
“I’m not going to answer about anyone in specific,” Llorente said. “A lot of elected officials have called me, a lot of people.”
The post has it’s plus side. “It’s an opportunity to get a position that is countywide that I think is incredibly important,” Llorente told me. On the downside: He just had his third baby a year ago and relishes family time, he said.
Plus, he’s doing well where he is, growing in prominence as a lobbyist. Perhaps because of his perceived access to the mayor, a friend he endorsed in the runoff between Gimenez and former Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina.
“I’m happy where I’m at. I’m enjoying life,” Llorente said, adding that he does see elected office again in his future, but wants to wait for the “right position.
“I’ve never run for something to use as a stepping stone to run for something else,” he said. (Read: He’s not hungry to take a chance at an office he wasn’t looking at and risk losing twice.)
Gonzalez is a little more desperate. Termed out of his office in Hialeah, he is basically shut out of the mayor’s race. Las malas lenguas say he expected Mayor Carlos Hernandez to hand him the reigns but Hernandez has seemingly picked Council President Isis “Gavelgirl” Garcia-Martinez. Rather than fight it out like a man, Gonzalez is looking for a way out of the Hialeah morass.
Not that he has any qualifications, mind you. The guy owns a print shop.
But he, too, said he is still undecided.
“I haven’t discussed it with my family,” Gonzalez said, though nobody will believe that.
He’s just waiting for the green light.

MR . Llorente was also the vice chairman for Mayor Gimenez’s reelection campaign after Gimenez’s got him a cushy job with a large law firm. There is no way a lobbyist should be running for the appraiser position which should supposedly be independent of the commissioners. No way I vote for this guy.
Ladra: one small correction on your awesome article- Marcelo Llorente is not friends with Carlos Gimenez! they are relatives. i dont quite remember if they are second cousins but they are related which was not discovered until after the Mayoral contest. seems that there was a master paln all along. thank you for your great work.
Bueno, Papá Gimenez sent junior to work out the deal with Gonzalez and ensure that Gonzalez will be onboard with the Master Plan.
The plan consists of making sure that none of Papi’s friends or politcal donors are discovered to be claiming homestead exemption on all their properties.
And if they are? Well we’ll just make it go away. No fines, no criminal charges, etc…
Poor Marcelo doesn’t stand a chance.
Por favor, Luis Gonzalez has no shot against Pedro Garcia or Alex Dominguez. First of all Hernandez will have lots of explaining to do by his association with Hialeah Mayor Carlos “the crook Hernandez” Also Pedro Garcia has more name recognition across the county having already run 2 times before for the position and having served a 4 year term. I have read about Dominguez in the paper and he doesn’t seem like he is going to let Gonzalez or Llorente slide thru untarnished.The guy called the City of Miami the Wild Wild West and wasn’t afraid to criticize the administration.(I like that) Llorente has some serious baggage which he brings to the table but undoubtedly would be a better candidate than Gonzalez (although he should wait for another position, this would be step down after running for Mayor) . Garcia is the front runner although he is weakened from his loss to Lopez Cantera. Anyone’s race to win. Luis go home. Ladra who you like?????
