Miami-Dade Chief of Public Safety James Reyes, who is running for the county sheriff’s post established by voters across the state in 2018, announced on Tuesday that he had accepted an invitation to debate Miami-Dade Assistant Police Director Rosanna “Rosie” Cordero-Stutz, who won the Republican primary last month to advance to the November election.
The announcement, made by the Reyes campaign, said that the first of two televised English debates would be on WPLG Local 10 hosted by Glenna Milberg on the weekly Sunday show This Week in South Florida on Oct. 6. There have also been invitations for another English language debate, one Spanish-language debate and at least two community forums, campaign spokeswoman Claire Van Susteren said. She did not provide details on those Tuesday.
“We look forward to announcing additional confirmations,” she said.

The campaign had called last week for a series of debates.
“Chief Reyes is the first candidate to formally accept a debate to be hosted by ABC’s WPLG and moderated by respected anchor Glenna Milberg,” Christian Ulvert, senior advisor to the campaign, said in a statement.
“After a decisive primary win, carrying precincts in every corner of Miami-Dade County, Chief Reyes is excited to share with voters why bipartisan leaders, community organizations and residents from all walks of life are supporting his campaign and offer a clear vision for Miami-Dade’s future,” Ulvert said. “Unlike his opponent who took to attacks, misleading information and divisive rhetoric mere hours after narrowly winning her primary, Chief Reyes has shown to be a unifier who will always put people and community above partisan divides.
“We hope Ms. Rosanna Cordero-Stutz accepts WPLG’s debate.”

She did. According to Tania Cruz Gimenez, the campaign manager for Cordero-Stutz, the candidate has accepted the WPLG invitation, which is the only invitation they have gotten so far.
