After a week hiatus, Political Cortadito Pics of the Week is back.
There were more parades last month for Martin Luther King Day — one in Homestead and one in Liberty City. There were luncheons and networking nights. Politicos went on radio and TV and commented on stuff, even, on the Justin Bieber DUI thing.
And, on a more serious note, a bevy of elected officials got together to honor one of the town’s founding fathers at the naming of the Robert Alonso Community Center. Alonso, one of the first council members and first vice mayor when the town incorporated, died last year. Of course, the current council was there: Mayor Wayne Slaton, and council members Tim Daubert, Manny Cid, Cesar Mestre, Frank Migno, Tony Lama and Nelson Rodriguez. But so were State Sen. Rene Garcia and Miami-Dade Commissioner Esteban Bovo and State Reps. Eddy Gonzalez and Manny Diaz, Jr. Why they would invite Hialeah Mayor Carlos “Castro” Hernandez to ruin such a nice tribute is beyond me.
An even bigger group of electeds turned out for the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber’s annual Mayor’s Luncheon. Of all the pictures in Miami Herald blogger Steve Rothaus’ facebook album, Ladra likes this one of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Maimi Mayor Tomas Regalado and Coral Gables Mayor Jim Cason the best. I wish there were captions. They’d say: “Yeah, I can get them to support my stadium,” “Is it over yet?” and “Whaaaat?”
And knowing a good media opportunity when he sees one, Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Grieco, who certainly has the looks and jabber for it, last week became a TV legal pundit on the Bieber case with several guest appearances on different news programs. Let’s hope it doesn’t come back and bite him on his political, um, bumper sticker.
Homestead Mayor Jeff Porter and his wife waved to paradegoers from his perch in his convertible.
Homestead Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough also rode in the parade, but she made sure to take photos with Miami-Dade Commissioners Audrey Edmonson and Dennis Moss, too. She is being courted to run against Commissioner Lynda Bell, and while she says she is staying put (at least for now), maybe she was testing he waters with the others on the dais?
Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (Ladra loves that leather jacket!!) was on Radio Mambi with her old colleague from the Florida House, former State Rep. Humberto Cortina, now a radio personality hiding behind red sunglasses. On the right, another radio host, Ninoska Perez-Castellon.
Ros-Lehtinen also guested on Al Punto with Jorge Ramos. She looks good without the leather jacket, too. You go girl.
