The breakfasts in South Miami have become a political staple. Gov. Ron DeSantis has been to the CasaCuba events hosted by Community News twice. Former Congressman Charlie Crist swung by last year. Miami-Dade Commission Vice Chairman Anthony Rodriguez was the last speaker.
They’ve had former Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas, former Miami Herald Publisher David Lawrence, who now leads The Children’s Trust, and new Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega.
This week, the guest speaker is former New Jersey guv and qualifying-for-the-debate Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie. That’s a big deal. There’s already a full house RSVPd.
How did Publisher Grant Miller land this big fish?
“It was a fluke accident,” he told Ladra Monday.
The CasaCuba powwow with pastelitos and politics was actually recommended to Christie’s people at an event in D.C., Miller said. “They were here looking for a place. They were looking at FIU. They were looking here, there. After a day of looking at other places, they said ‘We’ll do it at your event.'”
The Community News breakfasts are not sponsored by anyone or any thing so that there are no conflicts of interests, said Miller, who has been hosting the breakfasts for more than 10 years. “I don’t get sponsors. I don’t want anybody connected to anything.”
What he does get is 200 or so people, engaged super voters from both sides of the aisle, who can then expand whatever the message of the day is to their respective circles of influence.
