Miami-Dade Commission Chairman Oliver Gilbert assigned new committees and appointed the commissioner who will serve as chair and vice chair of these new committees, which are often where the details of projects and policies are debated.
Every woman on the commission got a chairmanship, which means that five women will be chair of something or other for the first time in county history. That’s a majority of the eight committees.
“A new direction for the 2023 board and an accomplishment ahead of the 50-year commemoration of the U.S. Congress designation of Women’s Equality Day,” says a press release from the county.
“Each woman on our board now has an opportunity to lead, this is the type of equity and inclusion Miami-Dade County should strive for every day,” Gilbert said in a statement.
Like what? Like he did females a favor? Please. Everyone knows the women on the commission are the strength.

“A government that values the perspective of women is one that values the perspective of all,” Gilbert said. “This is vital in the continuous effort to make our County a place for everyone.
“I am also confident in the abilities of other colleagues I have chosen as chair and vice chair of committees. All have demonstrated experience in the related areas and have shown dedication to the matters.”
Insiders also knew that Commissioner Raquel Regalado of District 7 would get the juiciest assignments as a consolation prize after being beaten out for the vice chair position by Commissioner Anthony Rodriguez of District 10. Not only does she chair the Infrastructure, Operations, and Innovations Committee, she is also vice chair of the Airport and Economic Development Committee. And, for good measure, she is on the Transportation, Mobility and Planning Committee.
Doesn’t that cover pretty much everything?

Caught holding the short straws with no committee chair or vice chair assignments: Commissioners Rene Garcia and Rob Gonzalez. What are they being punished for? Gonzalez is new and maybe doesn’t have Gilbert’s trust. But Garcia has been there two years and got passed over by all the newbies. Regalado and Micky Steinberg even got both a chair and vice chair assignment.
Anthony Rodriguez is only vice chair of the Chairman’s Policy Council.
