It’s official.
As expected, former Miami-Dade Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz is running for mayor of Sweetwater in the election this May. What else is he going to do?
Diaz announced his intentions to run Thursday in front of Sweetwater City Hall, after he filed candidate paperwork, flanked by those he said support him “and my return to the city.” They included Commissioners Saul Diaz, Isidro Ruiz, Reinaldo Rey, Idania Llanos and Jose Marti, as well as Miami-Dade Property Appraiser Pedro Garcia.

Diaz thanked Mayor Orlando Lopez on twitter, but it is unknown if Lopez is going to run for re-election or not. He was not at the announcement. Commissioner Marcos Villanueva has also expressed a desire for the job.
But whoever steps up will have a daunting task because Diaz already has almost $700,000 in his political action committee, We The People.
“I’m proud to be able to aspire to represent the city that has been my home for so many years and to be able to continue my public service to the residents of this great city,” Diaz said.
After 20 years on the county commission, Diaz was termed out last November and replaced with former Doral Mayor JC Bermudez. But he has been talking about running for Sweetwater Mayor — a seat he held from 1999 to 2002 — for years.
That’s where he got his start as a council member 31 years ago.
