Democrats are so worried about how the narrative on the governor’s race has changed since Hurricane Ian decimated some of Florida and Ron DeSantis didn’t completely blow it by tossing paper towels into the crowds.
Sure, his response has been sufficient. So far. Isn’t he doing exactly what he is supposed to? He’s military. They are good to have around in a crisis. And he is surrounded by people who are used to responding to hurricanes. Our search and rescue task force, for example, makes him look good.
Even President Joe Biden, who stood by him at ground zero to discuss relief efforts, has praised DeSantis’ quick and thorough response.
Yes, it’s true that hurricanes win elections. But the guv could get more votes out of his latest commercial with Casey DeSantis talking straight into the camera about how her husband responded to her breast cancer diagnosis last year.
The 60-second spot, titled “That is Who Ron DeSantis Is,” starts pretty typically for a bio. He grew up here, he worked his way up, served in the military, fought in Iraq, married her and fathered three children. Then the piano music fades and all you hear is Mrs. DeSantis’ voice, cracking a little.
“If you want to know who Ron DeSantis really is, when I was diagnosed with cancer, and I was facing the battle for my life, he was the dad who took care of my children when I couldn’t,” Florida’s First Lady says emotionally. “He was there to pick me off of the ground when I literally could not stand.
“He was there to fight for me when I didn’t have the strength to fight for myself,” she adds. “That is who Ron DeSantis is.”

The ad stops you in your tracks. Even if you weren’t paying attention to it at first, you are by the end. I’ve seen it happen to people. Casey DeSantis is sitting cross-legged on the sofa, in a pair of jeans and an old sweater. You feel like you are talking to a friend.
Who wouldn’t want to get to know that Ron DeSantis? He should run for office.
A recent Suffolk University poll had DeSantis leading the 2022 race for governor, topping challenger Congressman Charlie Crist, 48%-41%.
