¡Pero por supuesto!
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had to know that his stance against mask mandates in public schools — and his threat to defund schools and take away the salaries of school officials who defy him — would become campaign fodder for the 2022 election. He didn’t have to wait long.
Congressman and former Gov. Charlie Crist, who has challenged DeSantis, released an ad Tuesday to challenge the governor’s politically-motivated and irresponsible mask hysteria.

Titled “It’s About Kids,” the ad starts with a stream of news audio and headlines about the crisis in Florida, where three Broward teachers died from COVID-19 just last week.
“Florida leads the nation in new COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths,” Crist says in the 30-second spot. “And now Gov. Ron DeSantis wants to defund the schools where they’re asking kids to wear a mask?
“That’s not what we need. We need common sense and we need to do things right.”
The ad airs just as students get back to school and media markets targeted include Broward and Alachua counties, where the school districts have gone against the guv’s executive order against mask mandates.
On Wednesday, the Miami-Dade School Board will consider it’s own policy and it is expected — despite School Board Member Lubby Navarro‘s public falling in line behind DeSantis — to place some kind of mask requirement for teachers and students, particularly those under 12 who cannot be vaccinated, for when school returns next week.

Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho says he is leaning toward a mask mandate, which was recommended by a panel of medical experts on Monday.
“Governor DeSantis continues to recklessly threaten Florida’s comeback from the coronavirus by banning commonsense safety measures that let kids and teachers go to school safely,” Crist said in a statement. “We have all the tools we need to keep schools and our economy open, but DeSantis is risking everything on his foolish, partisan agenda.
“More and more Floridians are calling on DeSantis to just get out of our way, and let us protect our kids and our economy — and I stand with Floridians.”
