Watching Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo denounce the repression of the corrupt Cuban regime is like watching elite Cuban officials defend communism while they live like millionaires.
¡Que hipócrita!
Carollo has abused his four years in office and position in the city to bully and harass his political opponents or critics, real or imagined. He retaliates against anyone he believes has done him wrong. He uses the city and his position to do so. He is a dictator and would grab more power if he could.
Just ask Bill Fuller, the owner of Ball and Chain, the iconic Calle Ocho bar that Carollo has shut down, using the code enforcement department, because Fuller hosted a fundraiser for an opposing candidate in 2017. Fuller is suing Carollo in federal court for violating his freedom of speech.

Just ask David Winker, an activist attorney who helped the recall effort against Carollo and had code enforcement come by his house and illegally cite him after a 96-page “anonymous” dossier was distributed.
Just ask the residents of Silver Bluff who had their streets closed for a minority of homeowners who support the commissioner.
Just ask the voters who got knocks on their doors from Carollo lackeys telling them to take their recall petition signatures back and/or say they were coerced into signing them.
Do these tactics sound familiar? They are the tools of autocrats who want to stay in power at all costs. Like those in the Cuban regime.
“I am the grandson of Cuban families, both from the side of my mother and father,” Fuller told Ladra. “Both families faced the oppression and injustice of a corrupt regime. My mother fled as a Pedro Pan. My uncle lost his life on a Cuban firing squad fighting for the legacy of what his family had built.
“Sixty years later, my family and the families of my partner face a similar injustice and corruption at the hands of the city of Miami. Carollo is no different than the Cuban regime. He rules by fear and intimidation to exact revenge against his enemies and fill his pockets for himself and his friends with ill-gotten gains. Others he extorts for cash in the name of his failed “affordable housing” plan.
“From the mayor to the entry level staff, they’ll turn a blind eye to his corruption, for fear of being bullied, or worse, terminated. His support of the Cuban SOS movement and that from other city officials is hypocrisy and yet another moment for them to bask in their own bullshit.”
Crazy Joe Carollo is not just a hypocrite, he’s an opportunist. This is just the latest of a long history pandering to the base Cuban vote. Remember when he blasted Gente de Zona because they still had ties to the island and, allegedly, were tolerated by the regime? He actually used his city position to have them them removed from a New Year’s Eve line-up featuring Pitbull in 2019. And didn’t they take away the key to the city given to the band?
You know, censoring artists he doesn’t agree with. Like they do in Cuba.

Well, seems like now that their “Patria y Vida” song has sprouted an uprising, Carollo is into them.
All of this would be funny if it weren’t so sad and serious for the targets of his repressive wrath, if Joe Carollo wasn’t a dictator himself.
