As if we needed proof that the Miami-Dade mayoral race has become a partisan war, the Miami-Dade Dade Democratic Party, for the very first time, has paid to produce and air a television ad Monday for a candidate — for Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava.
Sure, they’ve helped in the past but in the background, but the party has never so openly been involved in the mayoral race as to pay for a TV spot. And it won’t be the last. The press announcement said the first TV ad, so there’s more where that came from.
Titled “Lider” and reportedly backed by a $50,000 buy, this 30-second Spanish-language spot casts Levine Cava, first elected to District 8 in 2014, as the “voice of the community” who will fight for better access to healthcare, more aid to small businesses, economic growth and jobs.
“For 40 years, my fight for a better future has always been for your families,” Levine Cava says in spot, also released on YouTube. Targetting Hispanic voters, there is no mention of her position on social issues such as police accountability and raising the minimum wage (which may not resonate as much as before because of COVID-19 and its economic impact).

Levine Cava came in second in the August primary race for county mayor, just behind Commissioner Esteban Bovo, the only Republican and conservative in the race. The runoff coincides with the presidential election Nov. 3.
“In November, our County finally has the chance to deliver on promises it has made over and over to its residents,” Miami Dade Dems Chairman Steve Simeonidis said in a statement. “We can build proper transit to connect our county, we can take meaningful action against climate change and move past empty words, and most importantly, we can elect a community leader who will truly listen to the residents.”
Simeonidis told Ladra that this mayoral race was very important to them.
“Democrats all across the country are doing everything they can to elect Joe Biden. Democrats in Miami-Dade are doing everything they can to elect Joe Biden and Daniella Levine Cava,” Simeonides said in a telephone interview Thursday morning. “The Miami-Dade Democdratic Party has two priorities.”
Simeonidis said it’s not only because Levine Cava is the “most qualified and best candidate” — and, of course, he didn’t have to say that she’s not the Donald Trump-loving, right-wing Esteban Bovo — but also because she would be the first female mayor of Miami-Dade.
“In a county dominated by male politicians, we’re on the precipice of a historic occasion,” he said. “And the Miami-Dade Democratic Party is going to spend a significant amount of man hours and a significant amount of dollars making sure we make history.”
How many dollars and what will we see in the next ad? “I guess you’ll have to stay tuned,” Simeonidis told Ladra.

State Senator Annette Taddeo, a Miami-Dade Democratic Party Committeewoman, also chimed in.
“I’ve known Daniella Levine Cava for a long time and she works every single day to improve her community and to give back to others,” Taddeo said in a statement.
“Daniella Levine Cava has what it takes to lead Miami-Dade through one of its most difficult moments ever and transform our County for the next generation, and it’s important for voters to learn more about her vision, experience and commitment to results.”
