If you thought Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert is going to have an easy coast in the Miami-Dade Commission race to replace the termed out Barbara Jordan, think again.
Gilbert may have more experience and campaign money, right now, but all the momentum belongs to Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old who was unarmed when he was shot dead in 2012 and became a poster child for the Black Lives Matter movement.
Fulton scored a major endorsement Sunday that could definitely help her get both more contributions and votes: Hillary Clinton‘s.
“A Mother of the Movement to prevent gun violence, @SybrinaFulton has already helped turn tragedy into action. Now she’s running for office as a Miami-Dade County Commissioner, District 1. If you can, contribute to help her win and make the change we need,” the former Senator, first lady, and presidential candidate tweeted Sunday, and included a fundraising link.
About 24 hours later, the tweet had more than 7,000 likes and 2,200 retweets, as well as close to 900 replies. Sure, some of those were haters, but others were people from far 25+ million followers who had not yet heard of Fulton — and donated.

Also within 24 hours, Fulton — who did campaign for Clinton in 2012 — also nabbed another high profile Democrat endorsement: Current Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker.
“Sybrina Fulton would have had every right to be overcome by anger and despair after the death of her son Trayvon Martin. Instead, she has turned her pain into purpose as an activist, organizer, and now candidate for public office,” Booker said in a statement Monday.
“I am proud to know Sybrina and stand shoulder to shoulder with her in the fight to end gun violence and achieve greater justice for all. She is a friend and an ally, and I fully endorse her candidacy for Miami-Dade County Commissioner.”
In comparison, Oliver has raised more than $345,000 in 437 contributions from many of the same usual suspects. That doesn’t count any political committee funds he may and likely also has. Benjamin’s Voice, the PAC for Fulton (that was Trayvon’s middle name), has only raised $2,000.

Fulton — who was honored by county Commissioner Jean Monestime in 2015 for her efforts to create awareness about racial profiling — also has Commissioner Xavier Suarez on her side. X once placed Gilbert on his dream slate but announced he switched to Fulton when he announced officially for the mayor’s seat.
Oliver blew the high profile nods off as outside interference that has no bearing on a local race. But he’s lying if he says it doesn’t hurt — just ask commission candidate (in District 7) who also campaigned for Hillary, former State Rep. and Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner, who is surely wondering where her endorsement tweet is.
Still, we won’t know the actual fundraising impact of Fulton’s exciting endorsements until after October 10, when the next campaign reports are due to be filed.
But while Fulton doesn’t have many contributions from Miami Gardens or Opa-Locka, the neighborhoods she would represent if elected, the former Miami-Dade County employee — she worked for 24 years in the Housing and Community Development department before her son was shot dead — had so much support from her colleagues that they donated eight months of their vacation and sick time so Fulton (photographed here with Trayvon’s dad) could be at her son’s murderer’s trial and seek justice. Ladra would bet they will chip in again to help see her in charge of their futures.
Plus, those people, and their friends and families, will also vote.
Maybe Gilbert should be more worried.
