Former South Miami Mayor Horace Feliu, who filed last week to run against incumbent mayor Philip Stoddard, has striken first with an email blast that gives voters — and the rest of us — a look see into the main issue of his campaign: Development. Or overdevelopment, as he sees it.
“Our quality of life is being threatened. Our current Mayor has literally put City Hall in the hands of developers,” Feliu opens.
“Several weeks ago, the Mayor voted to change the zoning of city hall in order to allow up to eight stories with increased densities. He has also voted for smaller lot sizes and higher density development throughout our city. This will add to traffic congestion and negatively affect our quality of life.”

Feliu — who was mayor of South Miami twice, from 2002 to 2004 and 2006 to 2010 — also brought up the beleaguered city’s police force. “Increases in crime and scandals involving our police department point to the Mayor’s lack of leadership in South Miami,” he wrote.
Please join my campaign to preserve our South Miami hometown feel and to bring back the order and leadership that is currently lacking.”
Feliu said that he had been asked by residents, even some that had supported Stoddard, to come back to City Hall. “They and many other citizens of South Miami want to see a return of common sense to our city government. Please join me on Election Day, this coming February 9th, 2016, in sending a clear message that the needs of our residents are above those of any special interest.”
And you can see that even the picture– of Horace and family at the Appalachian Trail — is certainly intending to make him look more green than the tree-hugging Stoddard.
This is going to be an interesting race.
