Hey, Jeb? Are we having fun yet?
The Right to Rise political action committee for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who said he would run a “joyful” campaign, is set to mount a multi-million dollar attack blitz on Sen. Marco Rubio, who is performing better in the race to become the GOP presidential nominee, accusing him, according to published reports, of missing important Senate votes and being too pro-Life to beat Hillary Clinton.
An alleged focus group in New Hampshire was questioned about their opinion of Rubio missing votes on two important GOP issues: The Iran nuclear deal and funding for Planned Parenthood. But what we don’t know is if the group was told that Rubio’s vote would not have made a difference in either. Planned Parenthood funding was approved 77 to 19. Should it have been 77 to 20? Republicans failed to stop the Iran deal 56-42. What difference would have Rubio made? None.
So why is this$20-million attack blitz good news for Rubio? Because, in addition to the pitty party vote he’ll get from those who will be (natch, already are) peeved or downright disgusted by Bush’s betrayal, this negative campaign proves that Rubio is quickly becoming the man to beat in the primary and it exposes Jeb as a bit of a hypocrite.
Rubio and his people must have known that Bush would go on the attack again, as he was at the last debate and on Tuesday, the day of the fourth GOP primary debate (this one hosted by Fox Business Network), because they released a 30-second video Tuesday, titled Jeb Bush before the phony attacks, with clips of Bush praising his onetime mentee.
“What Marco has, I think, is something that the Republican party needs to have, which is a hopeful, optimistic message based on our principles,” Mr. Bush says in one interview.
“I’m a huge Marco fan.”
“I am so proud of his high voltage energy,” he ironically says at a speech. “I am so proud of his enthusiasm. I am so proud of his eloquence.”
The ad also uses parts of this televised Charlie Rose interview about how Rubio was his “favorite” of the many VP contenders to Mitt Romney and how he was ready to step up and be president if need be. Ladra gives you more:
“I admire him greatly. He’s probably the most articulate, conservative elected official on the scene today. He speaks with great passion about American exceptionalism,” Bush said.
Rose asked if Rubio had enough preparation to step into the presidency should he have to. Said Bush: “He has more experience than Barrack Obama had when he ran, more practical experience and certainly has the intellectual acumen and the fortitude to be a good president. “
And then he beamed.
“I have a place in my heart for him. It’s hard to describe the pride I feel for his incredible success and how well he has moved into the job of United States senator with humility, not trying to be an arrogant guy, to learn the trade, if you will. People in Washington really admire him.”
What happened Jeb? Did that pride turn to jealousy?
It’s obvious that what the Senator said at the last debate is true: Someone has told Jeb that attacking Marco is a good idea.
But it’s not. Not only is it already backfiring among establishment Bush supporters who also love Marco, but just wish he would “wait his turn,” whatever the heck that means. But it also gives everyone another reason to mock and ridicule Bush and his faltering campaign.
Did anybody else notice the ad with the exclamation mark? An invisible question mark has replaced it.
