Sarah smiled Wednesday.

The 32-year-old daughter of former Palmetto Bay mayor Shelley Stanczyk Stancyzwas still in intensive care recovery Wednesday after undergoing six hours of surgery for a liver transplant Monday to save her life.

She has been stable since the surgery and awake and alert since Monday evening, her mother said posted on Facebook, adding that nursing staff was weaning her off the respirator and planned to disconnect it entirely. She does remain on dialysis.

“The next step in her recovery will be her move to the liver transplant floor. There her family and she will take classes on supporting her new liver, the necessary medications to prevent rejection and other related transplant issues during her recovery from the surgery.

Following that period Sarah and family members will permanently locate to the immediate area surrounding the hospital for 3 to six months. This provides stanczyk sarahaccess to necessary follow up care, immediate medical Intervention if necessary, and access to the many medical appointments.

Follow up care at the University of Wisconsin will last a lifetime but will taper off from multiple weekly appointments to multiple monthly to multiple yearly.

Sarah has begun a long recovery process from a surgery that saved her life.

Thank you for everyone’s prayers, good wishes and donations. Your donations will help with her medications and continued care here in Madison, Wisconsin.

As i was writing this, Sarah just gave us her first smile since her stay in St. Louis. Her Ventilator is gone now. I know there are many more smiles coming.

Thank you everyone for helping to save my Sarah.

Just over $15,000, more than half their target, was raised on the family’s GoFundMe page to pay for ongoing medical expense.

Mayor Stanczyk will remain in Wisonsin for the time being until her daughter has more fully recovered, which could take three to six months.
