The Miami Lakes Council — as incredulous to Mayor Michael “Muscles” Pizzi‘s story about his hit and run accident as the rest of us — will have a special meeting this afternoon to discuss getting an independent, third party investigation to look into whether or not there was a police cover up.
Pizzi, who was recently returned to office after beating federal bribery charges, was driving on 87th Avenue at about 140th Street around 8:20 p.m. June 16, when he slammed his black Kia Optima into a tree. Instead of calling police, he ran from the scene to a friend’s house, returning about 45 minutes later with a fresh face and a story about an animal darting across his way.
He told police he was driving home from meetings with staff and residents at Town Hall, but CBS4’s Gary Nelson has confirmed that Pizzi was at the Cancun Grill, where he may have downed a few. We don’t know that he drank for sure, because cops didn’t do their job, but that’s what everybody is thinking, anyway.

Especially since Pizzi keeps changing his story. Ladra almost expects a brand new one Wednesday afternoon.
Miami Lakes Councilman Ceasar Mestre, a one-time Pizzi ally, was the one to request the special call meeting to discuss the mayor’s accident. He did so last week after the public safety committee already discussed the accident during their regular meeting Tuesday. Residents openly and publicly voiced concerns about whether or not Pizzi got special treatment.
The committee unanimously recommends the council ask for the independent review by Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Anything would be better than the joke of an investigation done by the Miami-Dade traffic homicide detectives who were called to the scene and questioned Pizzi. There were more than a few red flags for them to know that something wasn’t right.
In fact, the problem is that now the investigation needs to center on whether or not the police provided Pizzi with extra protection from himself.
Pizzi is already toast. Whether it’s now or at the next election, one has to think his political career crashed one night two weeks ago.
