Just six months after being made chair of the Miami-Dade County Commission, Commissioner Jean MonestimeJean Monestime has nabbed the “Elected Official of the Year Award” given out by the South Florida chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA).

He will get it Thursday at the group’s annual awards reception at Parrot Jungle Island.

That’s the day before he leaves to Paris for the Air Show trade mission (read: junket) with Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez. The trip — with a side visit to Marseille — ends June 20.

“Chairman Monestime is being honored for being a community role model and unifying force on the County Commission, as well as for promoting prosperity initiatives,” a press release from his office states.

He is also the first Haitian-American to hold a commission chair position.

The reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday will be one place where you can likely see hundreds of electeds at once. And anybody who wants any favor from Monestime will have to be there to kiss the ring, so to speak.

Tickets are $25 for students, $40 for members and $50 for non-members and can be purchased online at <ahref=”http://www.aspaonline.org/southfla”>www.aspaonline.org/southfla.  For more information, contact Rosyln Alic-Batson at 305-375-5658 or at oraspasouthfla@yahoo.com
