Influential lobbyist Jorge Luis Lopez — who everyone says ought to have his own desk on the 29th floor at County Hall — seems to be trying to increase his influence and take it national.
Why else would he be having a fundraiser Friday for newly-minted Congressman Carlos Curbelo (R-Kendall).
Lopez sent out an invitation when, asking his friends and colleagues to join him and Congressmen Bill Shuster, Mario Diaz-Balart, David Joyce and Commissioner Esteban “Stevie” Bovo in support of “my longtime friend, Carlos Curbelo.”
Longtime friends? These circles didn’t collide until recently because now Curbelo must have something Lopez wants. We know Lopez has something Curbelo wants: Access to mulah.
And he’s going to need it. District 26 has already been identified as a target by the Democrats and we will be sure to see a viable candidate announce against Curbelo, hopefully before the summer. For whatever reason, they are looking at Annette Taddeo — a three-time loser who couldn’t be elect d to Congress against Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, couldn’t get into a second round for county commission and struck out with the failed run as LG ticket mate to former Gov. Charlie Crist last November. She is largely seen as a woman desperate for public office, any office — and the DNCC should look elsewhere.
And fast. Since Curbelo is already campaigning.
“The luncheon promises unique and insightful conversation with our leaders,” Lopez wrote in his invitation about the noon affair at the Hilton in downtown Miami.
But unique and insightful conversation with our leaders (read: face-to-face access) costs money. General “attendance” to the event will run ya $1,000. If you want to be a host, you must raise or contribute $5,400 and if you want to be a chairperson of the event (read: more facetime) you must pony up $10,800.
Talk about pay to play.
