There will be a congressional oath do-over in Miami Friday for those who couldn’t make it to Capitol Hill exactly a month ago.
These Congress members were already sworn in on the first day of Congress Jan. 6th. In fact, they’ve been representing their respective districts already, voting on the repeal of Obamacare and authorizing aid to Syrian rebels and holding hearings on the president’s desired thaw of U.S. Cuba relations.
But a local swearing-in on a downtime Friday provides an opportunity “to allow those individuals who were unable to attend the official swearing-in in Washington, DC to see members of the South Florida Congressional delegation to take their oaths of office.”
Well, is it really an oath? Because they been there, done that — right before they posed for photos with House Speaker John Boehner.
So, it’s more like a renewing of the vows. But so soon?
U.S. Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Frederica Wilson, Mario Diaz-Balart and Carlos Curbelo, the newest member of the rat pack, will raise their right hands and promise one more time to defend and honor the U.S. Constitution.
Keep in mind, however, that they all do that.
It will be the third time for Wilson, whose district crosses the county line. She had a ceremonial swearing-in at the Broward County federal courthouse two weeks ago with U.S. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and Lois Frankel.
“It was an honor standing with my Congressional colleagues to be sworn-in before family, friends, and constituents as we take the oath of office.,” Wilson posted on Facebook.
If you want to go and see this mostly theatrical moment, it starts at 10 a.m. this morning at the Wilkie D. Ferguson United States Courthouse, 400 North Miami Ave., in downtown Miami.
But if Ladra was there, she’d be watching the audience, see who goes to the event and how they interact with our electeds. That’s the only thing about the event that’s going to be real and/or important.
