The historic installation Friday of Miami-Dade Commissioner Jean Monestime, the first Haitian American to hold the chairman’s position, is likely to draw a lot more local politicians than these ceremonies normally do anyway.
Miami Herald reporter Doug Hanks tweeted late Thursday that even Gov. Rick Scott and Sen. Marco Rubio might be in attendance. I heard a Democrat congresswoman may also show up.
Monestime, the first Haitian American elected to the commission, will be sworn in as chairman and Commissioner Esteban Bovo — whose wife works for Sen. Rubio — will be sworn in as vice chair at 10 a.m. in what Ladra predicts will be a solid packed chambers. Get there early if you want to sit inside.
I’m not sure, but I don’t think they will take up any issues — such as the make-up and leadership of the subcommittees — right then and there. That will more likely be on the agenda at next week’s meeting, Monestime’s first as chair.

But the work has already started. Bovo and Monestime met in a Sunshine announced meeting last week to discuss their roles and vision for this new leadership team.
And the meetings start right away: Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez has a meeting scheduled with “Vice Chairman Bovo” at 11:30 a.m. — which is optimistic that the installation will be over by then.
