In the escalating war between the two men who think they are each mayor of Miami Lakes, today’s meeting promises to be fun, if nothing else.
“Urgent citizen action required to stop Slaton,” reads an email sent out Thursday to who knows how many addresses and by New Era Communications Corporations. But everyone knows that former, suspended, acquitted mayor Michael Pizzi loves the email blast as a form of shaking up the masses.
The email says that Mayor Wayne Slaton, who was elected in a special election after Pizzi was arrested on federal bribery charges in 2013, and City Attorney, Raul Gastessi — characterized as the mayor’s campaign manager “pretending” to be the attorney — only called the meeting this afternoon to protect themselves. It refers to a meeting the mayor has called to request that the council hire him legal representation to fight Pizzi’s legal dream team’s lawsuit to have the acquitted mayor — who bet the federal sting charges five months ago — restored to office, citing the Florida Constitution.

“The purpose of this is so-called ‘Emergency Meeting’ is to get Town Council approval to WASTE our TAXPAYER DOLLARS on PAYING the legal fees of high-priced attorneys attempting to defend Slaton’s illegally occupation of the Office of Mayor,” states the email, which also links to a CBS Local 4 report about Pizzi’s lawsuit to get back into office. It’s worth watching, if only for the part where Slaton drives away from Gary Nelson as the veteran reporter chases him down the parking lot with a microphone. Very Ladralike. I love it! Go Gary!
Nelson also brought up the campaign connection between Slaton and Gastessi, who he called a “campaign booster.” The email, which Ladra is sure Nelson got, intimates that the two are conspiring to stay in power.
“Slaton is trying to get the Town Council to authorize him and his campaign manager to hire multiple, expensive law firms to help Slaton stay in Town Hall after the Town has lost every court battle,” it states. “Slaton and Gastessi will PUSH the Miami Lakes Town Council to hand them a BLANK CHECK to hire their attorney friends with YOUR tax dollars! All so Slaton and Gastessi can keep their jobs!”

It ends with a call to action, urging the recipients to call the council members “and tell them to vote ‘no’ on this massive waste of your tax money!”
I suppose the council could just say no to the mayor’s request that attorneys be hired to fight this and just go with whatever decision a judge makes.
The email also says residents can go to the meeting “and be heard” at 4 p.m. today at City Hall, 6601 Main Street.
And, really, it’s gotta be good for the entertainment value at the very least. And cheaper than a drama at the movies.
