Well, it was predicted that in a midterm gubernatorial year, Republican voters would outnumber Democrats. And it is looking true statewide in the Florida governor’s race and in two key state races in Miami-Dade when it comes to the early voting and absentee ballots cast so far.
Of course, we don’t know how all these GOPers voted, but Gov. Rick Scott is likely looking at an advantage because, as of Tuesday, there were 142,000 more Republican voters statewide than Democrat voters, according to pollster Dario Moreno, who has access to those wonderful voter databases. The question is: Is that advantage or gap big enough to remain sustained through Nov. 4? After all, we all know that Dems vote late.
In House districts 112 and 114, there are also what seem like wide gaps, smaller proportionately, but perhaps less insurmountable unless there is a massive get-out-the-vote drive during the next six days. There were a little more than 2,000 more Republican voters than Democrats casting ballots in the 114 race to defend State Rep. Erik Fresen in his battle against both a Dem challenger, Daisy Baez, and independent Ross Hancock.
Despite the fact that Fresen got dangerously close to losing his seat in 2012, his incumbency this year was always expected to be safer given GOP performance in mid term elections.
The race for House seat 112 might be more of a challenge for the incumbent there, Democrat Rep. Jose Javier Rodriguez. Because J-Rod is looking at a potential deficit of just over 1,900 votes if all those Republican votes went to lobbyist Daniel Diaz Leyva.
Moreno told Ladra he did not have the votes categorized by party for the Congressional District 26 race between incumbent Democrat U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia and Miami-Dade School Board Member Carlos Curbelo, but I suspect that the GOP has a slight lead there as well.
He also said the numbers indicate that non-Cuban Hispanics are not coming out in great numbers like expected for Annette Taddeo, Charlie Crist‘s running mate and the former Miami-Dade Democratic Party chair.
“That could hurt Charlie Crist and Joe Garcia,” the professor told Ladra.
