We all heard Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos “Cry Wolf” Gimenez say it repeatedly last month and in August: He had saved the day. There were not going to be any layoffs at the Miami-Dade Police Department.
Well, either he lied or he flip flopped, because at least three police department employees received notices Wednesday that their positions have been eliminated.
Coincidentally, PBA President John Rivera said in a letter to Commission Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa and the commissioners, the three employees are members of the union’s bargaining unit.
“It not only reeks of retaliation, it is yet another example of why the mistrust exists between the employees and the administration,” Rivera wrote in the letter sent via email to Sosa with scanned copies of the layoff notices to Diana Diez, Lizeth Carrera and John Tormey.
“It is why we must question everything and demand clear cut answers when something is proposed by this ‘my way or the highway’ administration,” Rivera wrote. “Unfortunately, it is also customary of the strong arm tactics that seem to have become the norm and as long as they continue, only further to sever the relationship that must exist between labor and the administration if excellence is indeed to be delivered.”
Rivera reminds Sosa and the commission that Gimenez has gone on the radio and TV to brag about how he balanced the budget without cutting services or laying off one single police officer — down from 400 to 260 to 110 to zero.
“Either he was lying to the public or this action was nothing more than retaliation,” Rivera said, although Ladra believes it could be both.
“Either way, it is unbecoming of a leader.”
He urged the commission to “take charge and do not allow this administration to continue on its path of destroying this once great county.”
