Even Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Allison Tant — who has already filed a complaint against Curbelo for contradictions between his disclosure and other documents that indicate he is, indeed, the owner of Capitol Gains — chimed in.

“Yet again, Carlos Curbelo has shown that he puts his own political Tea Party agenda before doing what’s right for South Florida seniors. South Floridians expect their Representative in Washington to fight to protect and preserve Social Security and Medicare — earned benefits that honor our country’s commitment to our seniors,” Tant said, in yet another written statement.

“What they don’t want is another Tea Partier like Carlos Curbelo who supports the Republican plan to end the Medicare guarantee and thinks that these programs are a ‘Ponzi scheme.’ These comments show just how out of touch Carlos Curbelo is with South Florida, and why he cannot be trusted to represent Florida’s 26th Congressional District.”

Curbelo can also spot a good national issue for his GOP base when he sees one: Earlier this month, he issued a statement in response to President’s Obama’s address to the nation on the ISIL crisis — like he was an incumbent or something.

“While the Administration’s lack of strategy and leadership on foreign affairs has facilitated the growth and development of radical Islamic organizations, it is now time for our nation to stand together in the effort to destroy ISIL,” Curbelo said in a press release Sept. 10. “These vile terrorists have already viciously murdered two American journalists — one of them from South Florida — and represent a serious threat to American national security. I support the President’s effort to build a strong international coalition with the clear goal of eliminating the threat posed by ISIL to our country and allies. Every American will be safer when ISIL is extinguished.”

On Sept. 11, Curbelo paid press release homage to first responders and the resilience of our nation and a couple of days later he said down with domestic joecarlosviolence.

And he’s attacked Garcia on the administration’s failure to pass meaningful immigration reform for weeks.

In response to Garcia’s Univision interview, where the congressman said President Obama was prepared to move unilaterally on immigration policy, Curbelo issued a statement:

“In the midst of the current border security crisis, it would be most helpful if Joe Garcia recognized there was a border security crisis,” Curbelo said in what seems a 180-degree turn on his own immigration stance.

“Garcia amazingly said, and has since defended his position that we ‘don’t have a border security problem.’  We do need solutions and leadership that are borne in realities – both at the border and in correcting the mind-boggling mindset of Joe Garcia,” Curbelo said. “This nation cannot absorb tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors, and the President should respect the separation of powers. Unilateral action by the President on immigration policy would be grossly irresponsible and would send the wrong message to the criminals transporting unaccompanied children to our border.”

Expect both candidates to continue to expand on these safe issues — safe compared to the ethical questions they each face at home.
