DEVELOPING STORY: Miami-Dade County Commissioners took a recess during their budget meeting Thursday, but not because they were tired or wanted lunch.

The meeting was later cancelled as bomb-sniffing dogs came in for a sweep after a bomb threat.

Police dogs were called in to sniff around and see if they could find anything, but the 111 building was not evacuated, from what Ladra can tell, and nobody was taking it too seriously.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos “Cry Wolf” Gimenez issued a statement shortly after 1 p.m. — likely forced to by commissioners who tweeted pics of the dogs and reporters who tweeted about the sweep.

“Out of an abundance of caution, a Miami-Dade Police Department canine sweep is being conducted at the Stephen P. Clark Center. Further information will be provided when the sweep is concluded,” Gimenez said.

Commissioners apparently told a Miami Herald reporter they needed to evacuate their second and third floor offices momentarily. And Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa later cancelled “due to ongoing police activity” both the committee of the whole meeting that was interrupted and the Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting scheduled for that afternoon.

Reschedule dates will be announced at a later time, she said.

But on the 29th floor, mayoral spokesman Michael Hernandez said he and his staff continued to work as did the mayor’s staff on the 29th floor.

“No one has left our office. We have work to do,” Hernandez told Ladra via text. “Like any other day.”
