Common Sense NOW, the PAC that helped get Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos “Cry Wolf” Gimenez elected, has spent about $34,000 this year — all on polls and “data research,” which is a fancy way to say polling.
The most recent payments of $3,000 a piece each were made Aug. 6 and Aug. 19, which came after he was threatened with a recall and before he made peace with many of the employee unions.

Retired Fire Rescue Capt. Jack Garcia, whose son was one of four people killed in a boating accident on the Fourth of July, announced he would spearhead a recall effort against Gimenez in late July after the mayor refused to refund the fire boat. The first poll came about 10 days after. The second poll happened days before the mayor announced a tentative deal struck with one of four unions that have since then shaken hands with the county administration.
But maybe he was just due. Gimenez has been known to govern by poll and Ladra believes he hasn’t met a survey he didn’t like — even if he doesn’t like the results.

That was probably not the case with these polls, done by FIU professor and pollster Dario Moreno, who also did polling and data resarch in May (for $13,000) and in February ($15,400), and who all but worships the ground that Gimenez walks on. You know, if I was going to do a poll for Political Cortadito, I probably wouldn’t ask my number one fan to do it.
Moreno’s numbers have been repeatedly questioned throughout the years. Yet, Gimenez sure likes him. In addition to this year, Moreno was paid $34,000 for polling in January of 2013 and $9,000 for “consulting” in October of 2012.
See? He really likes to keep a close watch on the pulse of the community.
Maybe Moreno keeps telling Gimenez what he wants to hear.
