If it doesn’t cost him this primary today, the fact that Miami-Dade School Board Member Carlos “Crybaby” Curbelo is hiding his client list under his wife’s skirt will cost him the general election in November.
And it should.
It’s sort of scary to think of sending someone to Washington who might be using his elected position here to benefit his clients. I mean, what’s to keep him from doing it in Congress. It’s not like we haven’t seen that kind of insider, backroom deal go on before.

The issue with Curbelo’s company, Capitol Gains, and how he conveniently transferred ownership to his wife’s name before he ran for school board has become central to the congressional race in recent weeks as one candidate has hammered on it on every TV mini debate the candidates go on. Cutler Bay Mayor Ed “Big Mac Daddy” MacDougall, who has become a dark horse coming out of left field in this District 26 race, has rightfully skewered Curbelo for intentionally withholding information that could present a conflict of interest.
Curbelo, on the other hand, says he isn’t doing anything illegal. Sure, it’s immoral, he means. But he is following the letter of the law. He discloses everything he is supposed to disclose, he says. But the point is that he is not required to disclose his major clients because he is simply an employee, cough cough, of Capitol Gains and not the owner. That’s his wife.
“Someone can file a complaint,” he said on CBS4.
Really? Really? Is that the attitude we want from a congressman? “It’s not right, but it’s legal. File a complaint if you don’t like it.”
Haven’t I told you, Carlitos, that you are doing it legally because you manipulated a loophole in the law that lets you put the company in your wife’s name so you are not legally required to disclose who you work for?

If Curbelo loses today — and dogs can dream, can’t they? — Ladra will believe in her heart that she had a little bit to do with it, being the one who exposed this lack of disclosure of his business income.
If Republicans are foolish enough to nominate Curbelo today, despite these warning flags, despite the fact that they have four other candidates to choose from today, they will be handing Congressman Joe Garcia the victory in November.
Because I can guarantee you all that Garcia’s people are going to remind voters over and over again that Curbelo thinks it’s none of your business who his clients are.
And you can bet Ladra is going to keep asking him who his clients are.
In fact, this intentional move to circumvent disclosure laws isn’t even fit for a school board member who helps decide where billions of dollars in taxpayer funds are spent. So, maybe it will even cost him his school board seat in 2016.
Hey, when Ladra dreams, she dreams big.
