GOP activist Mimi Planas, a community council member in District 10, is getting married in October.
The president of the Miami Log Cabin Republicans will have to travel to New Mexico, however, to wed her fiance, Isis Martinez. That’s because the concept of marriage equality still hasn’t taken hold in Florida, where, in fact, the current Republican-led administration is taking every step to fight the eventual grasp of what is just and fair.
But Planas is not bitter.
“She’s just doing her job,” Planas said about Attorney General Pam Bondi‘s appeals of judicial decisions that would throw out the ban on gay marriage.
“If she didn’t, she wouldn’t be doing her job. She is defending the amendment that voters passed and is now part of our constitution,” Planas told Ladra last weekend, during the GOP’s Right Solutions Summit pep rally that she helped organize in West Dade.
She is referring to 2008’s Amendment 2, which defines marriage as a union only between one man and one woman, with almost 62% of the vote.

Planas, who ran for commissioner against Javier Souto in 2010 and lost (but Ladra is certain has more campaigns in her future) is not making apologies. She truly believes that the change in the GOP mentality must come from the inside.
“There’s already a number of Republicans in favor of marriage equality,” Planas said, naming U.S. Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and David Jolly, who recently surprised everyone and beat the better funded former state CFO Alex Sink in a heated race. And we have some candidates who are also in favor, she said, specifically pointing out two of the hopefuls in the congressional primary for a chance to face Democrat Joe Garcia — Miami-Dade School Board Member Carlos Curbelo and Cutler Bay Mayor Ed “Mac” MacDougall.
“That’s a big deal. That’s a long way from where we were just five years ago,” Planas said, adding that she thinks the battle will be won in the courts anyway.
Well, then, someone in the party should tell Bondi to stop wasting her time.
