First, he backed the idea on the dais. Then he sent an email pushing for signatures on a petition to “bring the UM Hurricanes home” by having the Major League Soccer stadium located at the Little Havana site where the Miami Marlins live.
Now, Miami-Dade Commissioner “Mayor Sir” Xavier Suarez has gone as far as producing an artist’s rendition for a soccer stadium next to Marlins Park.
“Staff from Miami-Dade County District 7 Commissioner Xavier L. Suarez has designed a model for a 40,000-person stadium for a Major League Soccer (MLS) stadium, which is situated next to the Marlins baseball stadium,” reads a statement from Suarez’s office.
“As can be seen in the rendering, several small parcels of land would need to be acquired; additionally, minor changes would be necessary on NW 17 Avenue. However, it is feasible and not costly since the infrastructure is already in place,” the statement reads.
“This is the only site with sufficient space which is accessible to public transportation, and also connected to principle roadways. The proposed site also takes into consideration the requirement of the Beckham Group that the stadium be near downtown.”
The statement says that in addition to Suarez, the Little Havana proposal has the support of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commissioners Willy Gort, Francis Suarez and Marc Sarnoff as well as former City of Miami Mayors Maurice Ferre and Manny Diaz — who also went as far as to produce a drawing of a potential stadium at the location — and Florida Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, whose district includes Little Havana.
“It’s the only one of the three that have been discussed that seems viable,” Diaz de la Portilla told Ladra Wednesday.
