The 2014 COPE Endorsing Convention of Florida AFL-CIO met this weekend in Jacksonville and endorsed Congressman Joe Garcia. But Palomares sent out a press release saying he got their nod, which he called “a departure from its 2012 support of incumbent Joe Garcia.”
“The significant endorsement from the union’s giant AFL-CIO propels the candidacy of the Reagan doctrine Republican activist as the Congress hopeful with the highest opportunity to obtain the crossover votes needed by a Republican to win the seat against Democratic candidate Joe Garcia,” reads the press release written by Palomares’ campaign manager Juan Garcia.
“I feel honored in accepting the endorsement of the unions representing our working residents after the AFL-CIO screening showing my commitment to strengthen economic development and job creating for the South end of the State of Florida and abroad,” Palomares-Starbuck — who, by the way, never seemed to use the name Starbuck before — said in a written statement.
Um, not so fast, Larry.
“I have no idea how he got that impression,” said local AFL-CIO President Andy Madtes, who was in Jacksonville for the vote.
“I was the one who stood up and read the endorsements and we are not endorsing anyone in the Republican primary,” Madtes said. “Why give anyone false hope, when the will of the body is to endorse Rep. Garcia.”
“Interesting,” said Juan Garcia, Palomares’ campaign guy. “He spent the weekend in Jacksonville. He sent me a photo of his name on a card and then called me and said ‘send the press release,'” Garcia told me, quickly trying to distance himself from the endorsement.
When asked to confirm the others, he said the Hernandez and Regalado nods were before his time and he couldn’t vouch for them.
Of course he can’t vouch for them. They’re bogus, too!
Ladra called Regalado, whose endorsement has a whole post on Palomares’ website, but could not reach him. His daughter, School Board Member Raquel Regalado, told Ladra that it wasn’t true either.
“No, no, no, no, no, no. He hasn’t endorsed anyone,” the daughter said, after she spoke to dad.
Reached Monday, Absentee Ballot Queen Sasha Tirador, who runs the Hernandez political machine, said there was no way the Hialeah mayor endorsed any candidate in the primary, either.
“Absolutely not,” she said. “And if he would, it would be one of the front runners.”
Ladra called McPherson at home, but had to leave a message. But other than Burton, who recorded a message supporting Palomares, the other endorsements are now questionable.
And so is Palomares’ candidacy.
