We knew it was going to get good. But did we know it would be this fast?
Less than 24 hours after former Congressman David Rivera announced he wanted his office back, and less than three hours after he qualified in Tallahassee for the race in District 26, two ex-staffers of his have endorsed Miami-Dade School Board Member Carlos Curbelo, who is seen as Rivera’s main rival in the primary, even though there are three other candidates (read: two). Former Miami-Dade Commissioner Joe Martinez and Cutler Bay Mayor Ed MacDougall also want a shot at challenging Congressman Joe Garcia, who beat Rivera in 2012, in Novemer.
The primary is in August.
“As native South Floridians with over 27 years of combined experience in the US House of Representatives, today we formally endorse Carlos Curbelo in his campaign to represent Florida’s 26th Congressional district,” wrote Hector Arguello, Rivera’s former legislative director and Ariel Fernandez, his former deputy district director.
Sounds ungrateful to me. But read on.
“The next two years are crucial in setting the course for our nation’s future. We need leaders who can focus on the work at hand and actively represent the people. There is no doubt in our minds that Carlos Curbelo is the best man to honorably represent the residents of the 26th Congressional district,” reads an email from Fernandez.
Fernandez and Arguello take a stab at their one-time boss, who has been mired in a number of controversial scandals and/or investigations into corruption and is currently a person of interest, at the very least, in the case involving the planting and financing of a fake candidate in the 2012 Democratic primary.
“Carlos is a highly qualified individual who for many years has been an avid fighter for this community and has worked tirelessly for the people of South Florida. Carlos has the aptitude, drive, integrity and focus to effectively
serve our community. We know Carlos will be an excellent representative of the interests of the residents of the 26th Congressional district, who for too long have been underrepresented in Congress by Members mired in scandal.
“Carlos is a man of integrity who will be able to devote his full attention to the serious work ahead in Congress, without any unnecessary distractions. We are proud to stand with Carlos Curbelo!”
