Miami Assistant City Attorney Veronica Diaz is looking for a new gig: Miami-Dade County Court judge.
Diaz filed to run Friday against incumbent Judge William “Bill” Altfield a career prosecutor who served for 24 years as an assistant state attorney in Miami-Dade who was appointed to the bench by Gov. Rick Scott in 2011.
A member of The Florida Bar for 11 years, Diaz was in private practice — specializing in commercial and real estate litigation — before she joined the city of Miami in 2007. According to the city website, she practices in the “Transactional Division” — now they are making up words — where she handles “complex commercial transactions for the City, including construction and development, public-private partnerships and other general business matters.”

Diaz also serves as counsel to various City boards, the website says.
And she better hope they are grateful. Because she will need a lot of contributors to catch up with Atfield, who has already raised almost $142,000 for the race.
It’s a coveted job that starts at $138,000, but imagine the TV opportunities for a young Miami Latina! The Magic City already boasts more TV judges than any other U.S. judicial district. Maybe that’s why former State Rep. Renier Diaz de la Portilla is running for judge, too.
Either way, it makes for much more interesting judicial races this year. And that is so far.
Because it’s a shocker that more people don’t run.
Only one other county court incumbent judge has drawn opposition so far and that is Judge Jacqueline Schwartz. Attorney Frank Bocanegra, who was on the shortlist last year to become North Bay Village manager, and former Miami-Dade ASA Rachel Glorioso Dooley have filed to run for that seat.
