The legislative session in Tallahassee opened almost two weeks ago and quickly became the center of universe. Several electeds from the 305 made the rounds with legislators, pressing their priorities and making their asks.
Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner stopped in Tallly, where she met with Sen. Dwight Bullard (D-South Dade). Along for the ride, lobbyist Jose “El Chino” Fuentes, who seems to be emerging unscathed from the FBI investigation that landed his partner, Richard Candia, in handcuffs for bribery.
Lerner later headed to DC, where she presided as president of the Democratice Municipal Officers organization’s conference. The job’s got perks, as she got to meet with Sen. Bill Nelson and introduce DCCC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz.
Among the local electeds in Tally were Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Commission Chairwoman Rebecca Sosa, who met with several legislators, including Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla (R-Coral Gables) and the next Senate Pres. Andy Gardiner, over two days last week.
Gimenez also had a chance to catch up with the new LG, former State Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, and it looks like they get along so much better now than when C-Lo was the property appraiser.
But while Wednesday and Thursday were all work, Friday was all play for Gimenez as he took in the Dade County Youth Fair with his family and tweeted this greeting. “At the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition with the best company of all, my family!”
A couple of weeks ago, many of the 305 Republicans headed to the 2014 Conservatives Political Action Conference. State Rep. Jose Felix “King Selfie” Diaz (R-Kendall) and Miami-Dade School Board Member Carlos Curbelo, both named rising stars under 40 at CPAC, decided to take a moment to support Venezuelan protesters from the red zone. Even though that has become a tired campaign theme already.
In Miami, Mayor Tomas Regalado and his sidekick Miami-Dade School Board Member Raquel Regalado spent some time last weekend celebrating with Juana Pereira on her 105th birthday.
And I gotta end with one I missed past a couple of weeks ago: Miami Beach Commissioner Jonah “Potty Mouth” Wolfson took it off last weekend for a good cause at the St. Patrick’s Day Carnival.
That’s a good idea for fundraising for the libraries or whatever… sit a bunch of electeds in dunking booths and sell shots for $1. Put Ladra in for $20.
