A breakfast chat about minimum wage and labor issues hosted by the Miami-Dade Democratic Party has changed venues after it received notice that two employees at Versailles Restaurant had sued alleging that they were fired after reporting illegal activities there that included wage violations and accusations of sexual harassment.
The event this coming Saturday, billed as the Dade Dems”first-ever ‘Blue Breakfast,’ will be at La Casita, down the block a bit, instead.
“As soon as allegations of these practices at Versailles surfaced, we moved rapidly to change the venue for our event,” said Dade Dems Chairwoman Annette Taddeo-Goldstein. “We stand on our principles, not only in light of the topic for this event — fair wages — but our core beliefs in equality and fair labor practices.”
The story about the lawsuit published in the Miami New Times also said that Versailles regularly discounted or voided charges altogether for some of the community’s most prominent members (read: politicians), naming Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado, U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Letinen, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, and U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart as examples. Notice no Democrats.
Must be a Castro-created communist plot.
Or maybe that’s why they love to have political powwows over there by the cafeteria window. Even Republican VP nominee Paul Ryan chose the historic Calle Ocho eatery for his Miami visit.
Attorney Reynaldo Velazquez, who is representing Versailles Restaurant and owner Felipe Valls Sr., issued the following statement:
“Versailles Restaurant, Felipe Valls, Sr. and its owners deny all allegations of unlawful conduct made by two former employees who were terminated for misconduct. Versailles and its owners are prepared to and will vigorously defend the allegations in the complaint that was presented to the media today. Although the owners very much want to speak to the media to address these allegations, they have been instructed by me not to speak to the press about matters in litigation until the case is resolved. Versailles Restaurant and its owners will address all of the allegations in the appropriate forum, which is in a court of law as opposed to litigating this matter in the media. Until then, there will be no further public comment about this case other than what i contained in this statement.”
Dade Dems are not going to wait to find out who is right. Registration for the “The Dollars and Sense of Minimum Wage” discussion and breakfast begins at 9 .m. Saturday at La Casita, not Versailles, at 3805 SW 8th St.
The program starts at 9:30 with panelists Senator Dwight Bullard, South Florida AFL-CIO President Andy Madtes, and former Department of Labor regional representative and party loyalist Millie Herrera.
The discussion will be moderated by Mark Richard, an attorney who represents several local labor unions.
