Miami-Dade Democrats are going all out for one of their party candidates, hundreds of miles away, with a phone bank Saturday and a big to-do fundraiser next week starring none other than VP Joe Biden.
Like they did with newly elected State Rep. Amanda Murphy‘s campaign last year — who eventually won the seat vacated by Mike Fasano, who resigned to become the tax collector — local Dems are supporting Alex Sink in her bid for U.S. Congress.
Sink, a former Florida CFO and Dem nominee who lost the race against Gov. Rick Scott in 2000, is running in District 13’s open seat in Pinellas County that has been held by the GOP for more than three decades, but which Democrats believe can go blue.
After all, President Barack Obama has won the district twice and Sink carried it in her failed 2010 bid for guv.
The National Journal ranked this seat as the third most likely to flip this year and many political observers have said that Sink appears to be the frontrunner here.
The race to replace former Congressman Bill Young, who died in October, has generated a lot of state and maybe some national interest because of the changing demographics in the district, her $1.1 million campaign war chest (compared to less than half raised by her Republican opponent, David Jolly) and because she is being labeled a carpetbagger candidate since she moved to a rented condo in the Tampa/St. Pete area from Hillsborough County just so she could run for this seat.
Also, since the special election is March 11, this has become sort of a de facto test case for anti-Obamacare political campaigning in the state.
Local Dems are naturally excited.
The Sink event with the Biden cameo will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the home of Michael and Judy Adler. Among those who we assume paid the $5,000 to be a host are Miami-Dade Democratic Party Chairwoman Annette Taddeo and political serial donors like Stephen Bittel, Jeff Bartel, Eddy Arriola, Chris Korge and Michael Moskowitz.
Guests only have to pay $1,000 — unless they want a selfie with Sink or the VP. The VIP reception and “photo line” has a $2,600 price tag.
The Democrats of South Dade Club will have a phone bank Saturday.
“Alex’s opponent is a dangerous conservative lobbyist with lots of Tea Party support,” the club’s email suggests. “In a recent debate he advocated the repeal of Roe v. Wade, called immigrants ‘criminals’ and favored war in Syria.”
The phone bank Saturday will be based at the home of Joel and Dee Zwelling in Continental Park (just west of Pinecrest) from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call club president Bob Goldstein at 305-970-9734.
