Rep. Jose Oliva lends juice for Miami Lakes sprint election

Qualifying hasn’t even started yet in the spring Miami Lakes election, set for Oct. 1, and already there are candidates with signs and handouts, knocking on doors and sending mailers.

Council candidate Frank Mingo — who is seeking to replace the outgoing Councilman Nelson Hernandez, who is seeking to replace the suspended Mayor Michael “Muscles” Pizzi, who was arrested in an FBI bribery sting — already has an endorsement.

And, yes, the expected one: A mailer was already sent for Mingo with a hearty hurrah from State Rep. Jose Oliva (R-Miami Lakes) — his boss.

“I personally know Frank Mingo,” reads Oliva’s recommendation. Duh, the guy works for you. Mingo is “supply chain supervisor” at Oliva Cigars. He’s also the husband of Oliva’s district secretary, Carmenchu Mingo, which sounds like an East African delicacy, doesn’t it?

“He will be an honest broker who will build consensus to accomplish great things for our town,” he continues. Key word: broker. And then he takes a veiled stab at Pizzi and strikes at the heart of what this election is going to be about “He’ll also be a strong voice for fiscal responsibility and ethical government. Frank is the right person at the right time to move Miami Lakes forward and get us back on track.”

Would that be the inside track?

The mailer is paid for by Citizens for Ethical and Effective Leadership, a PAC registered in Tallahassee which is headed on paper by someone named Daniel Cifuentes. But the campaigns for both Mingo and Hernandez are being run by campaign consultant David Custin, who is widely known as Oliva’s go-to boy.

Now some are saying Mingo and Hernandez will have that same role in the Lakes.
