Add one more name to what looks like a quite crowded special mayoral ballot for Miami Lakes to replace the suspended Mayor Michael “Muscles” Pizzi, who was arrested Tuesday for his role in a federal grants kick-back sting set up by the FBI.
Despite rumors that Miami Lakes Mayor Wayne Slaton, who lost to Pizzi in November with a 62 to 38 percent result, was too beaten up about it to campaign again, Slaton says that he is the only one who is right for the job.
“Let me be clear, and dispel any rumors or misunderstanding,” Slaton opens in an early Friday morning email to Ladra and a bunch of other people who circulated the post on the wannabes lining up to replace Pizzi. “I am running for the seat of Miami Lakes Mayor.
“I made a commitment to run for Mayor last August and will continue in that endeavor with this new opportunity to again serve out the term of Mayor for which I campaigned,” Slaton wrote, calling some others who have considered the job — which include the new Mayor Cesar Mestre, who did not support him, and Councilman Nelson Hernandez, who did — Johnny Come Latelys.
“Where was everybody back then, that’s thinking about running now. Did they not think there were any problems? I did. Or were they too afraid to take on the challenge? I wasn’t,” Slaton wrote in a daring opening salvo. “I founded the Town of Miami Lakes serving as Mayor for two terms. I am certainly qualified and most capable to get this Town and it’s tarnished reputation back in order.”
Some of the would be candidates said they will speak to the other would-be candidates by today to figure out if anyone should drop out of the race and support someone else.
Then again, where is former Councilwoman Mary Collins? Don’t count her out just yet.
